Student safety is of the utmost importance to us at the Oconomowoc Area School District. We realize the decision to delay or close school impacts more than 5,000 students and more than 650 employees, so we do not make that decision lightly and try to balance safety with learning needs. We will always err on the side of caution, and make decisions regarding school cancellations that will be in the best interest of everyone’s safety.
This is how we make decisions about closing school due to cold weather conditions:
- We take extreme precautions and consult with various professionals to determine whether or not we should delay or cancel school due to weather conditions.
- In making decisions about school closings due to cold, we use a threshold of approximately negative 30 degrees F Extreme Cold Warning (this is the warning threshold used by the National Weather Service). If there is an Extreme Cold Warning of negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit or if there is a snow or ice event bad enough to affect transportation, schools will be closed.
- Unlike closures due to weather such as freezing rain and snow, we are sometimes not able to make a decision the day before a closing.
- In the event that a closing decision is made, we will send a phone call, text message, and email to families, post the information on the Emergency Information Page of the district website and social media pages, and notify local media sources.
- The OASD will send phone messages, text messages, and emails using the phone numbers and email addresses provided to the district by families during registration.
